Building Sustainable Tourism with Patricia Madeira
October 30, 2019
Patricia, (you can call her Pats), grew up in the historic and cultural city of Coimbra, the "Portuguese Oxford". Growing up here allowed her from an early age to come in contact with many cultural movements and with people from all around Europe. As a child she spent every calm and exciting, long holidays with her grandparents in the countryside or abroad (in Paris, where they lived). Read on to learn about her own exciting venture in Lisbon!
What are you currently working on?
I am dedicated full-power to Lisbon with Pats, my Lisbon Tailored Tours project, as well as researching more in-depth about the history and the stories of this magnificent city. My ambitions are quite simple, yet complex - becoming a better human being, writing and travelling as much as I can!
How was the idea for your business born?
Pure serendipity, I believe. I always loved to travel and through my journeys I made a lot of friends. Over the years, those friends, national and international, and friends of friends have asked me about what to do, where to go or dine in Lisbon for a truly authentic experience. I discovered not only did they appreciate my tours and recommendations; I really enjoyed the experience of guiding people through the city, sharing my abiding love, knowledge and appreciation for a place so rich in culture and history. So, creating Lisbon with Pats was a natural and organic process, as I wanted to create an opportunity to share with more people the richness and authenticity of the city, that I so much love.
What has been your boldest career or life change?
Leaving my full time job at an advertising agency to fulfill my dreams and building my own project.
What has been the biggest obstacle during your journey?
Having no certainties. ;-)
How would you like to impact the travel industry?
My aim is to contribute and to support a more sustainable tourism practice through a true connection between people and the destination they're visiting.
We all know travel can bring us to unexpectedly * magical * moments. Tell us about one you’ve experienced.
When I had the chance to learn the millenary discipline of Ayurveda in its place of origin (India). It really felt like magic!
How are you using what you've been given in life to bring more good to the world? (Or how would you like to?)
Through practicing what I "preach". Making people feel special and making them truly connect and engage with such a special place.
